New Haven Museum will premiere the documentary, “Champion for Freedom: The Reverend Alexander Heritage Newton Story,” by preservationist Dolly Marshall with independent scholars John Mills and a Q & A with the CT Freedom Trail's Andre Keitt at CT’s Old State House, in the House of Representatives.

About the event
This free Juneteenth event is part of NH250, an ongoing series culminating with the 250 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence highlighting inclusive, local, and lesser known stories connecting past and present.
The film is inspired by Rev. Alexander Heritage Newton's autobiography "Out of the Briars" written in 1910 in Camden, NJ. Rev. Newton describes how his early life in the South influenced his activism during the struggle for freedom and equality. Although not born in Connecticut, it’s this activism that led him to enlist in the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment.
