Aside from some historians and Civil War buffs, Alexander Newton's life and
accomplishments aren't widely known, but that might change after the National Park Service
added Newton's grave in Lawnside to its National Underground Railroad Network.
The listing is one of 17 nationwide for sites, programs and facilities that tell the story of the
Underground Railroad, a network of people, routes and safe places for ferrying people out of
slavery. Though there are already more than 700 such sites across the country, Newton's
gravesite in Mount Peace Cemetery is just the sixth in New Jersey.
